But when faced with The Holocaust, the enormity can overwhelm us. How can we even begin, seventy years later, to imagine how such an event occurred?

The truth is that we can't. Some of the greatest of modern historians and philosophers have devoted their entire careers to the question and have yet to reach a conclusion.

The statistics are so huge as to be almost incomprehensible, almost meaningless. Only when the subject is reduced to a personal level can most brains certainly mine process the details of what The Holocaust actually meant.

And that is what Affinity Konar has done. Though her novel is based on the story of real people, it is the result of an incandescent literary imagination and, perhaps, more human empathy than can possibly be good for her.

It took her ten years to write, and to stare into such an abyss for so long must have needed considerable emotional strength.

But, as she would no doubt say herself, nothing compared to the strength the survivors needed. Twin girls, Pearl and Stasha, twelve years old when the story begins and on the cusp of womanhood, arrive at Auschwitz with their Mother and Grandfather.

They attract the attention of Mengele who, because of their fair hair, asks if they are "mischlinge". This word, to put it politely, means "of mixed blood" - i.

Jew and Aryan. This is not the case, but hints at a genetic oddity which further interests Mengele. Terrible, terrible things are done to them which, thankfully, the author does not overly dwell on: but this rarity of description only increases the level of shock and revulsion when details are given.

The girls try to survive by thinking of their happy past and their hope for happiness in the future, by helping their fellow inmates who become a makeshift family, and by thinking increasingly graphic thoughts of revenge on Mengele.

To further paraphrase Mr Cohen, they "ring the bells that still can ring". I would be doing the potential reader a disservice by revealing any more of the plot, so I won't.

But I will tell you that, while the book shows the depths to which human beings can sink, it also reminds us of the heights we can reach, and that even the deepest blackness contains a chink of light.

The language used is luminous, and the book has been compared to a fairy tale. This is not as ridiculously inappropriate as it may sound as, when you think about it, many fairy tales are shockingly disturbing and violent, and many horrible things are done and said in them "Be he alive or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread" for example.

And, though I said I'd give away no more of the plot, there's a passage in the book which is clearly based on "Hansel And Gretel".

And it works: maybe it shouldn't, but it does. This novel is a major achievement, and makes a worthy contribution to our understanding of the darkest period in human history.

Though I doubt 's Man Booker judges would be willing to give their award to an American author for a second successive year, I will be astonished if "Mischling" doesn't, at the very least, make the longlist.

An exceptional book. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Very moving account of a set of girl twins in Mengele's 'Zoo' in concentration camp.

Doesn't dwell too much on the horrific things done to the children but explores the connections between the girls; how one would physically feel what was done to the other - part of what fascinated Mengele and prompted his so-called research.

Beautifully written, with a chapter by each girl in turn, showing how they used memories and little routines to get them through these horrible years, how they tried to protect each other and how they and other inmates formed almost family groups to look after each other.

Unexpectedly, a 'happy ending'. A book I'll remember for a long time. NB: Mischling means a cross-breed, and refers to Mengele's question to their mother as they arrived, because despite being Jewish, the blonde girls looked Aryan.

A wonderful debut novel. Twin sisters Pearl and Stasha are taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the horrors they are part of and witness at Mengele's Zoo are central to Mischling.

The relationship between the twins and the friendships they make give this story beauty and I hope. Beautifully written.

I've read a few books about The Holocaust and have read in passing about Mengele's Zoo, but I've never read such an intense and emotional novel such as this.

My youngest sisters are identical twins and I couldn't help but imagine them in Stasha and Pearl's place. Reading this also reminded me that we still don't know enough about the horrors of Mengele's Zoo.

Unless of course we actively research the subject. One person found this helpful. I was totally engrossed in this book, reading it in a couple of days.

Terribly tragic, heartbreaking and heartwarming at times. That such evil existed is well documented but this book takes the reader personally through the hell of that terrible place that was responsible for the lives of so many.

I just kept praying that the two characters would reunite one day in this life or the next. I was not disappointed.

This book held me from the first page to the last and left me wanting to know more of their lives afterwards.

I highly recommend. A story of life in Auschwitz as twins. Stasha and Pearl tell their stories of expermental procedures carried out on them by the infamous Dr Josef Mengeles.

This book gives a harrowing look inside the camp but also details the wonderful relationship between the sisters. Not an easy read at times but one well worth the effort.

Highly recommended. Load more international reviews. It is easy to see why some people do not believe the holocaust happened when you read this book because it is difficult to know that what was done to these children was done by a human being.

It should be taught in schools so that it can't happen again. I found this book a very interesting subject of how people survived during the holocaust.

I will pass this information on to other friends and relations. My heart ached as I read this. My eyes opened to the sheer misery inflicted on innocent souls.

Where there is life there is hope. Lest we forget I wonder has Dr Mengeles family ever read this or any book about the barbaric things he done and how they excused it away what kind of mind did he and his cronies have to hurt children in this way just can't comprehend.

A very difficult subject expertly written with characters who were believable and deep. Life persists through adversity and this novel illustrates that principle so well.

Harrowing and beautiful, this was a real find and its imagery lives on long after the ending. A very moving and emotional book.

Horrific to read at times, but always gave the reader a chance of hope. This holds true even if only one parent or grandparent is From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Furthermore, military conscription had been decreed by Hitler in early in a complete flaunting of the detested Versailles , and there was concern about the impact of a broad definition of "Jew" on the dramatic expansion of the new Army with its draftees : how would a new recruit react to a letter from home informing him that his father was, in fact, now considered to be "Jewish" and was as a consequence no longer a citizen of the Reich?

Accordingly, in the case of a Jewish-Christian intermarriage, one spouse had to convert to the faith of the other. Almost without exception, the Jewish partner converted to Christianity.

First degree Mischinge, as the Nazi plan developed, were forbidden to marry either "true Germans" or second degree Mischlinge; and if they married Jews, they would by virtue of the Nuremberg blood law themselves be deemed Jewish, which to say the least was not a healthy status to assume voluntarily in the Third Reich.

The reasoning behind this was that a mischling marrying an Aryan would produce a child with an acceptably low amount of Jewish heritage, but a mischling marrying a mischling would just produce another mischling.

As for vocations, most jobs in the public sphere—such as journalism, teaching, performing arts, government positions, politics etc.

While the classifications of Mischling also applied in occupied Western and Central Europe, and were well-documented for the Netherlands and Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia , this was not the case in Eastern Europe.

Consequently, an unknown number of Christians of recent Jewish background from Poland and other occupied territories, primarily Catholics or Eastern Orthodox in this case, were killed as "Jewish" in the Holocaust.
