Because the movie has been available if not officially for so long, you may have heard the twist by now. Knowing that doesn't really diminish the effect, which is a gut-punch — or, more accurately, a gut-stab.

Berberian Sound Studio is about making a giallo , the kind of bizarre '70s Italian horror popularized by Dario Argento, among others.

And yet, there are none of the giallo 's trademark visuals or gore. That's because the film-within-a-film is heard but not seen, as foley artist Gilderoy Toby Jones tries to create sound effects for an increasingly brutal movie.

Sometimes hearing is worse, though: Berberian Sound Studio is punctuated by screams, not to mention the sounds of flesh boiled in oil and hair pulled from its roots.

By the time the film takes a surreal turn in its final act, we're already trying to shut our ears, a more daunting prospect than closing our eyes.

But things quickly go south thanks to some mysterious alien intervention, and before you can say "keg stand," time is slipping out of control.

As guests at the party come face to face with their exact doubles, the wonder quickly turns to horror — the existential questions are heavy enough, but on a purely practical level, what happens when there's two of you in one place at the same time?

The original Maniac was controversial in for its extreme violence and perverse subject matter. The remake, of course, comes at a time of different standards.

Yes, the gore is more explicit, but what Maniac does that's far more interesting is put you in the mind of the killer, quite literally.

For most of the film, the audience sees through the eyes of Frank Zito Elijah Wood , a psychopath who scalps women to dress up his mannequins.

The gimmick could wear thin, but Wood is so strong in this deeply twisted role — and the murders so brutal — that the overall experience is both satisfying and unbearable.

By the end, you feel culpable. And filthy. The plot of Contracted is fairly straightforward: At a party, Samantha Najarra Townsend is drugged and raped by a stranger.

The next day, she begins suffering from the symptoms of a strange STI. But Contracted isn't merely interested in grossing out the audience.

It is, to be fair, really gross, showcasing the kind of body horror weirdness that will make fans of David Cronenberg squirm in appreciation.

There's also a rather obvious allegory at play, as Samantha struggles to cover up the increasingly obvious signs of her sexual assault.

That this was something done to her and not anything she asked for is lost on those around her.

Despite what some have claimed, wasn't a great year for mainstream horror. The Conjuring and The Purge , for all their accolades, were weak and derivative overall.

Surprisingly, it's a remake that offered the year's most original studio horror. Evil Dead doesn't feel much like the original — gone is the humor, both intentional and otherwise — but it's an interesting film in its own right.

Jane Levy is great as Mia: She serves as both demon and Final Girl, culminating in a gloriously bloody final confrontation that rivals the original Evil Dead 's.

And no, I'm not referring to Bruce Campbell's split-second cameo. But in this case, the strong segments outweigh the weak ones, and the overall result is a disturbing and legitimately frightening set of found-footage shorts.

Special attention is due to A Ride in the Park , which documents a zombie outbreak from the perspective of a camera on a cyclist's helmet, and Safe Haven , an incredibly disturbing look into an Indonesian cult.

The secret of the family at the center of We Are What We Are is teased out long after it's obvious — but that doesn't matter. The film is less about finding out what the Parker family is and more about the internal struggle within the family.

When their mother dies, daughters Rose Julia Garner and Iris Ambyr Childers try to break free from their violent traditions, while patriarch Frank Bill Sage refuses to budge.

It's a thoughtful, slow-moving film with the occasional jarring burst of violence that underlines the horror. Without giving too much away, the final scene in particular is gorgeous but difficult to stomach.

While several of the films on this list employ humor, Bad Milo! And it is funny! Had me laughing throughout! Released in the US in June Not Rated 84 min Drama, Horror, Thriller.

After being drugged and raped at a party, a young woman contracts what she thinks is an STD; but, it's actually something much worse.

Interesting spin on the zombie formula. Very much a drama crossed with horror, so expect a slow pace. The reviews are a little harsh in my opinion, I thought it was quite good.

Not Rated 93 min Drama, Horror, Mystery. A man imprisons his estranged junkie friend in an isolated cabin in the boonies of San Diego to force him through a week of sobriety, but the events of that week are being mysteriously manipulated.

Votes: 13, A very unique, low-budget indie flick. It's a strange hodgepodge of genres and is quite memorable - I never guessed what the hell was going on, which is a good sign seeing as this is a mystery-horror.

R 98 min Comedy, Horror. An expectant couple who moves into the most haunted house in New Orleans call upon the services of the Vatican's elite exorcism team to save them from a demonic baby.

I don't understand the low score on this, all in all it's a pretty good horror-comedy. The horror takes a backseat to the comedy, but that's standard with most horror-comedies.

It's a good laugh, and although it loses steam near the end I really don't understand the harsh IMDB rating.

R 85 min Comedy, Horror. A man learns that his unusual stomach pains are being caused by a demon living in his intestines. If you've ever seen Basket Case you'll know what to expect, and whether you like this or not will largely depend on how much you liked that film.

Low-budget, campy horror-comedy with a touch of pathos. R 91 min Horror, Thriller. Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

All in all it's a well made, brutal horror film, but it's just not an Evil Dead film - the humour and cartoonish monster design have gone completely.

Leave your expectations at the door and pretend the film has a different name, you'll probably have a much better time. R 81 min Action, Comedy, Horror.

A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces, and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

Only of interest to fans of tongue-in-cheek 80's slashers and gorehounds. Fast, funny and gory - a definite step up from the very lacklustre Hatchet 2, this is almost on equal footing to Hatchet 1 in terms of overall quality.

Good fun. Not Rated 97 min Fantasy, Horror, Mystery. A teenager is stuck in a time loop that is not quite the same each time.

She must uncover the truth but her actions have consequences for herself and others. Votes: 16, May be a bit tame for some, but the premise is great and they do a good job with it.

The unfolding mystery kept me engaged until the end, even though it's pretty obvious what's going on. A group of students go the location of the infamous Dyatlov pass incident to make a documentary, but things take a turn for the worse as the secret of what happened there is revealed.

Votes: 22, Decent found-footage horror, so if you're a fan of those types of films this is worth a spin. It doesn't do much new in the genre, but it ticks all the boxes.

The snowy mountain setting is different and the second half mixes things up a bit. PG min Action, Adventure, Horror. Former United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.

I guess this is the first blockbuster zombie film! It's decent enough, although the action overwhelms the horror a lot of the time.

The scale of the carnage is worth the price of admission, it's just a shame the third act scales down the huge scope of the film so much it feels like it goes from an epic blockbuster into a regular indie horror film that it's quite jarring, but far from bad.

R 86 min Horror, Thriller. A gang of ruthless highway killers kidnap a wealthy couple traveling cross country only to shockingly discover that things are not what they seem.

Incredibly silly and very cheesy, it is, however, quite good fun. An enjoyable enough revenge flick with buckets of blood and some inventive kills.

Cheap, dumb and fun - only recommended if you like stupid movies. Released in the US in March R 76 min Horror, Mystery, Thriller.

There are no cheap scares, just a relentless sense of dread that runs through every scene. It's hard to do killer clowns right.

Sure, clowns are inherently frightening, but they're also absurd, and clown-centric horror films have a hard time striking the right balance between gruesome and funny.

Stitches offers perhaps the perfect blend: Even at its goriest, it's so over-the-top that it's almost cartoonish. At the same time, Stitches Ross Noble , a reanimated clown seeking revenge on the kids who accidentally offed him at a child's birthday party, is appropriately menacing.

He's campy enough to delight you — he makes balloon animals with one victim's intestines — but you're still a little terrified.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is the oldest movie on this list: While it finally hit select theaters and DVD this year, it's actually been lingering with a troubled distribution deal since What's impressive is that, even seven years after the fact, the film still feels fresh.

It's a straightforward slasher — the titular Mandy Amber Heard is menaced by a psycho killer along with her attractive high school friends — with some genuinely subversive elements.

While several of the films on this list employ humor, Bad Milo! And it is funny! Duncan Ken Marino learns there's a demon living inside his ass — it emerges in the most uncomfortable way imaginable — bent on enacting Duncan's hidden urges, especially when those involve murder.

Milo's rampage is violent and disgusting — I mentioned the part about him living in Duncan's ass, right? Even with blood and shit flying in various directions, Bad Milo!

The trailer for the latest direct-to-DVD installment of the Child's Play franchise didn't exactly inspire confidence, which is why the joy of Curse of Chucky was such a pleasant surprise.

It's not the CGI-addled reboot fans incorrectly guessed it might be, but rather a true continuation of the story, returned to its sincere horror roots.

At this point, the revelations we get about serial killer Charles Lee Ray Brad Dourif don't add much — but it's refreshing to see a sequel so fully committed to its origins, while also bringing something new to the table.

Leave it to Chucky's creator Don Mancini to get things so right. If The Walking Dead has taught us anything, it's that the zombie story needn't be about the zombies — the survivors are far more interesting.

But The Battery proves more effective than AMC's uneven series in fleshing out its characters Ben Jeremy Gardner, who also wrote and directed the film and Mickey Adam Cronheim , two former baseball players doing their best to stick together and stay alive.

There are some genuinely stressful moments, but most of the film presents horror on a different level, with a fantastic soundtrack doing all it can to drown out the ever-present zombie moans.

A fairly slow-burn but I doubt most folks would even notice. Highly recommended if you like a serious horror film once in a while.

R 95 min Horror, Mystery, Thriller. When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

I can't see any horror fan not liking this, a least a little bit! It's well paced, well acted, has good production values, doesn't hold back on the nasty bits and keeps the tension high throughout.

Released in the US in August R 84 min Horror. Toward the end of World War II, Russian soldiers pushing into eastern Germany stumble across a secret Nazi lab, one that has unearthed and begun experimenting with the journal of one Dr.

Votes: 7, B-movie goodness! Although quite low-budget, this is a must-see for anyone who appreciates cool creature designs, practical effects and a bit of tongue-in-cheek Nazi horror.

It may be too cheesy for folks who are looking for a more traditional horror film, I think this one is purely for fans of goofy cult horror.

PG 84 min Drama, Horror, Thriller. A young couple moves to the woods and soon finds their nightmares and reality colliding.

Some people really don't seem to like this! Well, I thought it was fantastic and a breath of fresh air in the found-footage genre.

The first half of the film is pretty standard fare, but things get really weird in the second half - a real mind-bender!

If you like found-footage films I can't help but recommend it. R 96 min Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his house and find collection of VHS tapes.

Viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be dark motives behind the student's disappearance.

As with nearly all horror anthology films, the quality is a little up and down, luckily most of the segments are clear hits and make up for the slightly weaker ones.

Good stuff. R 87 min Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi. Journalist Anne Roland explores the disturbing links behind her friend's sudden disappearance, an ominous government research chemical, and a disturbing radio broadcast of unknown origin.

Votes: 8, A bit messy, and there's a Hunter S Thompson-type character who felt out of place, but the creepy moments really lift it up.

Great ending. R 89 min Horror. A team of Vatican investigators descend upon a church in a remote area to demystify the unusual happenings, but what they discover is more disturbing than they had first imagined.

Votes: 6, A really well made found-footage film. Some decent humour, good scares and an ever mounting sense of dread.

Great ending - very Lovecraftian. Not Rated 91 min Comedy, Horror. Reg and Lindsay run an organic fertiliser business.

They need a fresh supply of their "secret ingredient" to process through the meat grinder. Reg comes across two guys and a girl with a broken-down vehicle on their way to a music festival.

Played solely for the laughs, this Aussie film is a really good time if you want something a little lighter. Had me laughing throughout!
