McWilliam's introduction to his own translation. It can be generally said that Petrarch's version in Rerum senilium libri XVII, 3, included in a letter he wrote to his friend Boccaccio, was to serve as a source for all the many versions that circulated around Europe, including the translations of the very Decameron into Catalan first recorded translation into a foreign language, anonymous, hand-written in Sant Cugat in It was later retranslated by Bernat Metge , French and Spanish.

The famous first tale I, 1 of the notorious Ser Ciappelletto was later translated into Latin by Olimpia Fulvia Morata and translated again by Voltaire.

Since The Decameron was very popular among contemporaries, especially merchants, many manuscripts of it survive. The Italian philologist Vittore Branca did a comprehensive survey of them and identified a few copied under Boccaccio's supervision; some have notes written in Boccaccio's hand.

Two in particular have elaborate drawings, probably done by Boccaccio himself. Since these manuscripts were widely circulated, Branca thought that they influenced all subsequent illustrations.

In Branca identified Codex Hamilton 90, in Berlin's Staatsbibliothek, as an autograph belonging to Boccaccio's latter years.

Accattone Porcile The Hawks and the Sparrows An adaptation of nine stories from Bocaccio's "Decameron": A young Sicilian is swindled twice, but ends up rich; a man poses as a deaf-mute in a convent of curious nuns; a woman must hide her lover when her husband comes home early; a scoundrel fools a priest on his deathbed; three brothers take revenge on their sister's lover; a young girl sleeps on the roof to meet her boyfriend at night; a group of painters wait for inspiration; a crafty priest attempts to seduce his friend's wife; and two friends make a pact to find out what happens after death.

Pasolini is up to his old tricks satirizing the Church, and throwing in liberal doses of life and love.

Review by Sally Jane Black 2. How quickly this film bounds into the realm of scatological humor. It's profane, disgusting, and vulgar, but it's not stupid.

It's snarky, but it's not mean, exactly. It does not mock religion, but rather, the superficial concerns of the church.

It is a film that appreciates irony as it should be, which is to say, the basis of a good story. This film's stories are all quite ancient, but their views on sex and their sense of humor seems quite modern, even if the punchlines also feel a bit off-color to me.

That is, of course, the biggest flaw here. Either because of the source material or in his haste to make mock, Pasolini depicts ten tales that fall short….

For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, In the twilight,….

Of the collection of tales only a couple leave no impression. Some of the best however are truly fun and engaging.

One of the best comes near the end which is about two men who have an agreement if one dies he'll tell the other what the afterlife is like.

The one that dies has constant sex with his girlfriend while the other believes that is sinful and vows to remain pious. The one that dies comes back and tells him all about it but learns that messing around with your girlfriend is no big deal.

The stories are pretty mixed but do run toward the rather good end of the spectrum mostly. Worth checking out. Review by Josiah Morgan 2.

Spirituality equals vulgarity in Pasolini's ode to sex and debauchery The Decameron , the first flighty entry in his raucous Trilogy of Life.

Submitted for your approval: ten tales of slapstick, scatophilia, and sex, plus a nicely flowing substory where Pasolini plays Giotto's best pupil attempting to complete a fresco for a small city's church.

Each of these tales refuses to take an officious approach to philosophy, instead resituating life, love, and experience to the people. At the same time, and as the film's haunting final line indicates uttered by Pier Paolo Giotto himself , the artist is crucial for modern society's survival because of his deep connection with the dreams of the people.

Pasolini's attempting to sketch a world that delights in the simple pleasures - even the depravities have an innocent air - but don't confuse the affection for nostalgia; the perennially Marxist director is still taking aim at the ruling classes.

What better way to attack tastemakers than by fucking with notions of taste? Remember, Boccaccio wrote in the vernacular back when Latin was the way to go.

It is a paradox; visually stunning and horrendously ugly. Review by Anas Alomari. I am beginning my viewing of Passolini's Trilogy of Life.

This was an interesting first introduction to it. At first I was a bit lost as I usually am with old movies. And then I fully realised the format of this movie and enjoyed it much more.

Interesting stories when you realise how short each one will be. Not sure I'd recommend it though.

I am also starting to notice how prevalent sex is in Passolini's work although I have only seen this and Salo so far.

I look forward to the rest of the trilogy. One of Pier Paolo Pasolini's most engaging and unendingly entertaining pieces, this bawdy selection of nine stories, based on the collection of novellas by 14th-century writer Giovanni Boccaccio, is perhaps one of the director's most easily approachable ones for general audiences outside of his very early movies.

However, instead of being just simple adaptations of the existing tales, the director goes down the route of rather evoking the spirit of Boccaccio's writings, dispensing with the original framework entirely a group of people taking shelter from the Black Death and telling stories over ten nights to pass the time , and makes a film that uses the stories as a springboard to highlight issues in his own,….

I saw Canterbury Tales so long ago Hard to really critique this trilogy one way or another. They're all essentially doing the same things, but I don't really grow tired of the bit.

Fun, liberated cinema. Pasolini creating a film that, yes, delves into the taboo of sex, the taboo of defying Christianity in a way that goes against the commandment of lust and other taboos.

Pasolini is trying to push boundaries, but it never feels like he has to do it to shock the audience, it feels incredibly wholesome, it feels like he's just trying to test ideas and to make sex less of a taboo, to make it more open than a sin.

I cannot fault Pasolini for making this as wholesome as possible, and in an genuine way. The first and probably my favorite of Pasolini's trilogy of life sticks to the formula and themes of following several tales involving sex and greed with lots of nudity and slapstick humor.

Some of the same actors are here including Pasolini himself and it starts out with a painter and his crew that are looking for inspiration on painting a mural.

Then we cut to the stories or episodes, if you will. He is then dropped into a trough full of….

The tamest of the three Pasolini films I've seen, but that's only because I'm comparing it to the possessive insanity of his masterpiece Teorema and the sadistic Salo, or the Days of Sodom.

Yet, everything here feels vintage Pasolini from its obsessions with nudity, sex, taboo, religion and politics which all cast an unbelievable presence over every frame here.

Each segment of this anthology touches on a different concept from the director's aforementioned obsessions, but away from the complete drama of his other films they have a greater focus on slapstick humour and that makes it all feel so free and impressive.

Pasolini is an acquired taste and one whose immense vision and purposeful ability to shock, disturb and engage his viewer make him one of cinema's true provocateurs of controversy.
